GMS International Night Is Back!

International Night at Gaithersburg Middle School is back! With your help, it will be better than ever!  Friday April 5!  Please support this amazing evening by sharing your Country of origin or ancestry with others.  Families and individuals are ask to show and share something with others...culture,dress, food, maps, flags. Tables will be set up for each county. Want to share a table with someone?  No worries,  grab a friend and be paired at the same table (please indicate on sign up you want to share and with who if possible). Go to the Sign Up Genius and start planning! Students that participate on a table will be given 6 SSL hrs!


SGA

The SGA will be staying after school TODAY Wednesday 3/27 from 3:20-4:20 in Ms. Mesina's room.

If you are unable to make it, please let Ms. Mesina know.


Minority Scholars

The minority scholars will be having an SSL opportunity this coming Thursday with Identity from 5:00-8:45 pm. Students will meet in the cafeteria. Please let Ms. Hungsberger, Mr. Padilla, or Ms. Mesina know if you cannot make it


Mrs. Foster’s Period 4 and Period 5 health classes should report to the gym locker room today instead of Room 402.


College Trip

Attention all 8th-grade students: If you HAVE NOT received a college and career field trip permission slip, please see Ms. Larcamp in room 809.


Boys Soccer

Attention boys soccer players: We WILL BE PRACTICING today after school. Meet Ms. Larcamp and Mr. Guibert in the cafeteria after school. We will be practicing outside.


8th Grade End of the Year Celebration Field Trip

8th graders will be going to Hershey Park for the End of the Year Celebration on June 7.

Please return permission form and money to the school by April 15. If there are any questions or concerns please contact Larcamp or Mr. Padilla.


Registration for Extraordinary Minds in MCPS Forum is OPEN!

Curious about what supports are available in MCPS for students on the autism spectrum? Join us at out 11th annual xMinds in MCPS Forum on Tuesday, April 2. Our annual Forum informs parents about public school placements and services for students across the autism spectrum in Montgomery County. This Forum is an important service that helps parents participate meaningfully as members of their child’s Individual Education Program (IEP) team.

This year’s breakout session topics include:

  • Elementary Home School Model

  • Diploma Track Elementary School Services

  • Organizational Strategies for Everyone

  • Intro to the Zones of Regulation

  • Differences between Diplomas and Certificates

  • Montgomery County Police Department’s Strategies for Keeping Kids on the Spectrum Safe

  • Introduction to PEERS Social Skills Curriculum

  • Reading Comprehension Strategies

  • Intro to Unstuck and On Target

  • FBAs and BIPs

  • Transition 101 Curriculum

Intramural Sports

  • Students in all grade levels are invited to participate in one of our 3 intramural sports programs being offered this spring.

  • The activities being offered this spring are softball, Trick Shots, and Backyard games. All three intramurals will meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from March 26th through May 9th.

  • The only thing you need to bring in order to participate is a signed permission form. Permission forms are available in the boys and girls locker rooms and the main office. Please see Ms. Evans, Ms. Barnes, or Mr. Zimmerman for additional information.

Student Service Learning (SSL) Hours

Need SSL hours? There are several SSL opportunities coming up in March to help the members of Asbury Methodist Village with their book fair. March 21st to March 31st are the dates available to help with the book fair. It is a close walk from GMS! For specific directions and times, please see Ms. Mesina in room 101.


SSL hours for the Superintendent's SSL Award

The deadline to submit SSL hours to qualify for the Superintendent's SSL award is April 5th. All hours must be submitted by this time in order to qualify. Students completing the 75-hour requirement for graduation by this time will receive the Superintendent's SSL Award.


Holocaust Museum Permission Slips

Attention all 7th-grade students: remember to bring in Holocaust Museum permission slips and money by March 29th. Give permissions slips and money to your math teacher. If you need a permission slip see Ms. Khoury or Ms. Myat.


Shoe Drive

Project Change is sponsoring a shoe collection at GMS from March 4 to May 4.

The donated shoes can be worn or new.

The shoes will go to micro-entrepreneurs in developing nations.

The collection box is in the main office.


Volunteers Needed

31st Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup April 13, 2019 9:00 am to noon. This is a service learning opportunity to help improve our environment. Once a year, there is a big effort to clean up the Potomac River and its huge watershed area which encompasses some of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland and the District of Columbia.


Some of the many cleanup sites in our region are in your backyard. The C&O Canal Association is sponsoring a number of sites along the Potomac River. Those open include Carderock, Anglers, Great Falls Tavern, Swains Lock, Pennyfield Lock and Violettes Lock and Rileys Lock. Volunteers under the age of 18 require parental supervision). If interested, please contact Jim Heins, coordinator of these sites at vip@candocanal.org. If interested in other sites, you may contact the Alice Ferguson Foundation at potomaccleanup.org or call 301-292-5665.
