Fall Book Fair is Coming to GMS

The fall book fair is from Monday, Oct 22 through Friday, Oct 26. Students are encouraged to come find a new adventure in some great books. We will be open from 8:00am until 3:00pm, and they can stop in anytime with permission from their teacher. We will also be open until 5:30pm during the SGA Dance on Thursday Oct 25. Parents are always welcome.

We are looking for volunteers to help make this a successful event for our students and our school. Please use the sign up genius if you can help:


As a result of the book fair, Mr. Edwards classes for Period 1 and 2 will meet in these locations:

Period 1 will meet in room 302

Period 2 will meet in room 309


SGA News

  • The SGA is asking for donations of water and Candy Bars for the Fall Dance and the Basketball games. Any donation can be brought into room 101. If you have any questions or would like to make other arrangements for drop off, please contact Ms. Mesina. The SGA is also looking for Volunteers for the dance. Please check the Sign Up Genius to see how you can help!

  • The Fall Dance, is on Thursday October 25th! The dance will occur from 3:20-5:00pm. Activity buses will be running. Tickets will be sold next week at lunch for $3, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The SGA will be staying after school on Wednesday to decorate the cafeteria.

  • Spirit Week Spirit Week will be held on October 29th - November 2nd. The SGA has decided on having the following spirit days: pajama day, color day, generation day, twin day, and hat day.

  • Pennies for Patients The SGA is conducting a penny drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. This organization collects money to further research efforts for people with blood cancers. The SGA will be collecting coins and online donations. The SGA members will be distributing donation boxes and flyers to teachers on Friday, during Viking Time. Our school donation site is also listed on the GMS website for more information.

Naviance

Counselors will be going into Science classes to present Naviance lessons for all students on October 25 & 26. These lessons will allow students opportunities to learn about a system that they will use for the remainder of their education in MCPS.

Naviance is used by all schools in MCPS to set academic goals, plan courses for high school as well as learn about colleges and careers.

Sixth graders will have an introductory lesson to the program and seventh and eighth graders will begin to talk about careers and set academic goals. Feel free to contact the counseling office for additional information.


Holiday Giving

The Montgomery County Holiday Giving Project Coalition is offering some assistance for families that may be in need during the holiday season.

If your family would like to be considered for assistance during this holiday season, please call the counseling office at 240-740-4960 by Monday, October 22. A school counselor will be able to provide additional information as needed.


Free Dentist

Gaithersburg Middle School Linkages to Learning program is offering a dental visit through Smile Maryland for our students on Friday, November 9th, 2018. This event is during school hours. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact the Linkages office at 240-672-1480.


Applications for High School Magnet Program

Attention 8th graders: We encourage you to apply for the high school magnet program that is right for you. Come see Sr. Padilla in room 800 if you have any questions and for more information and literature regarding the application process and to receive a code to join the google classroom that can be used for application help and other resources. In addition, on Wed. Oct. 24 and Thursday, Nov. 1 Sr. Padilla, Mr. Evans and Ms. Lynch will stay after school to help you with your application materials. The application deadline is Friday November 2. The details can be found on the MCPS webpage:


MCPS Hearing and Vision Screening

In accordance with the Maryland State Law students in Montgomery County Public Schools are screened for possible vision and hearing problems. Trained hearing and vision screeners will be screening students new to MCPS in 6th, 7th, 8th grade, and students referred by teachers because of possible signs of hearing or vision problems on October 26th, 29th and 30th 2018

You will receive a referral form to take your child’s to the doctor if your child fails the screening.

If your child is already under care for a hearing or vision problem, or you do not wish your child to be screened at school, please notify the school nurse in writing.

If your child wears glasses or contacts, they should wear them every day and bring them to the screening.


Yearbook

Be sure to order your yearbook now for $35.00! After October 26th the price will go up. You can order online at Jostensyearbooks.com See Ms. Marie Dolan in room 300 if you have any questions.

Open Gym

Mr. Miller will be having open gym for students on Fridays from 3:10-4:30pm. There are no activity buses on Fridays so please provide your own transportation.


GMS World Cup

Soccer fans! The 3rd annual GMS World Cup is here. The deadline for turning in permission slips is today. Be sure to get your signed permission slip and team rosters in to Sr. Padilla or Mrs. Larcamp in room 800 by the end of the day. Remember, if you do not have a team, or if you need players to complete your team, we can help you out with that.
